“Sylvia was daily deserted; Allegra had merely had her Christmases spoiled.” (page 48) Do you think this is a fair interpretation of the feelings of an adult child when parents become divorced?
Ok, now that I've got that rude comment off my chest - I think it may be more difficult for an adult child to deal with divorce than a young one. So, no I don't believe this was a valid statement for Allegra - she's still spoiled - but has lots of baggage. I got the impression that she was still trying to find herself - sometimes to the point that her gayness was just another way to get attention.
I don't know this, but I do think it's probably harder on young children than adult children -- though I could be wrong. Anyone out there know? And I think it's probably harder for long-time marrieds than younger ones, but, again, thankfully, I don't know. My sympathies here are firmly with Sylvia.
E, why'd you think Allegra was spoiled? I don't think i got that. Curious to know what you think...
Fed up with a traditional book club where few people were showing up for meetings anymore and even fewer were reading the books, we decided to form an online group. This way, we can have an actual, well thought-out conversation about a novel or book and nobody even has to clean their house.
