It's time to pick a book (or two)

So we haven't really talked about what we are reading next or when we are gonna do it. So. Let's do that.
When I brought this up a while back, Jenni made the following suggestions:
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. Jenni said "e I need to read this, and I guess I'm going to have to do it. One told me, "It's the best book about a schizophrenic transexual I've ever read." (I'm not making this up. She really said that.)"
The Boy Who Was Raised As a Girl by John Colapinto. Jenni said "I ead it some years ago and it has haunted me ever since. It's fascinating. And it does bring up a lot of hot-button issues that might be club-worthy too."
I have a couple suggestions of my own:
Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression by Brooke Shields. Another non-fiction option since I know at least one of you isn't a big fiction reader. Plus, I wanna see what got Tom Cruise's panties in a wad.
Life of Pi by Yann Martel. I have read this. It is amazing and I would love to hear your views on it.
Got any other good ideas? Leave a comment. I'll put up a poll with all of the suggestions next week so we can pick the next book.
Also, since we still seem to be talking about DIWC, shall we have it be our July read and August discuss book? I know that people are busy all the time but particularly in the summer. Let us know what you think...

  • The Brooke Shields book would be interesting in light of the recent birth of Grier (and Brooke not having PPD this time). I'm game for anything, though! Chrissy

  • The two you suggested are both on my "books-to-read" list, MamaC, so I'm excited about any of them. (My books-to-read list is a spiral with about 300 titles, augmented every week. I will NEVER get through it...)

I think Life of Pi might make for good conversation. I haven't read it, but I remember hearing it was sort of philosophical and multi-layered.

How's this on timing? If Pi or Middlesex (or something as-yet-un-nominated) (C'mon, girls!), gets picked, let's start talking end of July or August. If it's Brooke or Boy-Raised-Girl, I think we can whip through those in a few weeks and chat in July. (I'm just thinking people's lives tend to start to get hectic again in August with Back-to-School and the like...)

  • And --- I was just responding to another post, and thought of yet another book I've been meaning to read: Bowling Alone.

It came out a few years ago. It's non-fiction, but deals with American society and our anti-socialism. I think it might be a bit dry, but probably interesting. And since we're all obviously "community joiners," we might get a kick out of it.

  • I can't decide! I read all the blurbs and they all look good. At first I thought I'd vote for the fictional entry since we just read "true".... but I just don't know.

I saw a decorative pillow in a shop yesterday it said "Put your big girl panties on and Deal With It"... I have my big girl panties on and still can't decide!

So... I'll go with the concensus of the group.

  • Ooh, look at us all be so indecisive! And I'm no help either. I think Life of Pi is my last choice just based on the blurb, only because (and this may be offbase and silly) I hated Island of the Blue Dolphins when I was a kid and it seems like one of those Castaway inner monologue things. But, everyone seems to like it in reviews and I'll read it if everyone else decides to.
They all sound good. We could have our schedule posted through Christmas. We just need to decide which order to read them.

  • I would suggest The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. I had to read it for my sociology class, and it was good, and discussion worthy.

  • Hey, Charity. I tried my hardest to get this on the reading list a couple months back and these smart and lovely ladies didn't go for it. After I read it - while it was very good, albeit a bit disconcerting - I'm a little glad. But thanks for the suggestion! And thanks for reading! I hope you will read along with us...

  • Hey, did you guys know that M. Night Shyamalan is doing a movie on The Life of Pi - I think it comes out next year. I've read it - great book (although starts out a bit slow) - wouldn't mind reading it again later down the road.

Btw - I'm BACK. Sorry I flaked out last month. The move was crazy and I just dug the book out of a box. Still getting myself organized. Hope you guys are all doing well!! :)
