"Middlesex" it is

You voted and our next reading selection will be "Middlesex" by Jeffrey Eugenides. After that, we will be reading "Down Came the Rain" by Brooke Shields. Leave me a comment and let me know what a reasonable timetable for reading the next selection is for you. Please keep in mind that Jenni seems to think this is a pretty quick read so perhaps we should start discussing this the third week in July? Anyone - RR contributors only, please - wanna lead the discussion? I will be happy to do it if no one else volunteers.

There is a new poll about future selections. Go vote in it!

And if you are a visitor, please leave comments if you have read a book that we are discussing! Or feel free to read along with us and comment. It's fun! And educational!

  • Hi guys,

    Two things from me:

    * I have no memory of the incident at all, but apparently I was knocked off a jet ski by another jet ski -- which was moving -- last week. I'm OK, but I have a dislocated shoulder and lots of bruising along the spine.

I am on massive doses of Vicodin right now, and my arm (of course, the right one, and, yes, i'm right-handed) is in a sling, so my typing is very slow and sloppy. And i'm a little more loopy than usual. I have been in bed for a while now and just sort of re-entering the world. i think it may be a few weeks before i'm whole again. sitting here and typing is stressful. how pathetic is that?
The good news? I can read with this handy pillow fort creation my husband made to hold a book for me, so i'll get started on middlesex.

Which is my second point...i haven't read it, and it is long. i've had 2 or 3 people tell me it's good and a quick read, but it's a hefty little sucker, so it may take folks a while to read. Me, i got nothing else to do these days, but you people with jobs and no prescription pain meds might find it slower going...

  • MamaC -- Is there any way we can vote on some of the books, but not all of them? I regret ever mentioning Bowling Alone, bc I have a feeling it's going to be very textbookish. ...

  • I agree with jenninapa, I think this book will take a while to get through. It seems like it will be good, but when I picked it up from the library I almost needed a crane to get it in the car, it's that big! Seriously though, I haven't started yet but I'm guessing I'll need until the end of July for sure. Maybe we could kind of play it by ear??

BTW, hope you're having a great vacation MamaChristy! Hope you brought Middlesex with you! heeheehee

Jenninapa, it sounds like you are in bad shape! You poor thing! My hubby dislocated his shoulder several times - not fun! I feel for ya girl! Try to enjoy the pampering while you're laid up!

  • Jenninapa - OMG! thank goodness you are ok (well recovering at least instead of the opposite)

I have not bought the books yet - I went out today, but got hooked by a 75% off sale at Foleys and spent 6 hours at the store... alas found nothing that I could not live without. By the time I got done the book stores were closed (GASP!!!!)

  • I've finally started reading... interesting style of writing... can't hardly wait for chapter 11!

  • Okay, the book really picked up for the last half. So for those of you not there yet, there is light at the end of the tunnel! I just finished it....

  • Could everybody start discussing August 1? I'll volunteer to moderate, if no one else wants to...

By Blogger JenniNapa, at 5:02 PM

  • Jenni - moderate you may. I've stared drafting some questions and I'll send them to you to pick through...

By Blogger MamaChristy, at 8:00 PM

  • As usual, I have not started. I'm hoping I can get through it, since everyone says it's so long. I ordered it on Paperbackswap weeks ago and it's taking forever to get here.

  • How about we all agree to post a progress report by Monday, July 31? I'll look at where everyone is, and post questions accordingly. I may steal Stolie's idea and break it out into weekly sections, depending on how folks are doing. Cool?

  • I'm not making much progress... still stuck in Greece... maybe the reading fairy will shine on me tonight.
