M-Sex Eight Strong Enough For A Man ...

Cal states that, other than his attraction to The Object, he wasn't uncomfortable living as a female. Do you believe him? Were his actions concurrent with this assertion? What do you think would have happened if he never read the doctor's report?

  • If he wasn't uncomfortable as a girl, then why all the drama in the locker room? Why was Calliope so unnerved, even more so than your run-of-the-mill adolescent girl? I'm not buying it.

  • I totally agree, Pegs. He may have been comfortable in women's clothing - even though he didn't fill them out like the other girls did - but I felt like Cal was saying that to make the first 15 years of his life not seem like such a sham. I think that by telling us he was happy enough as a female in his youth, he is protecting his family. Admitting unhappiness and having his parents do nothing about that unhappiness, would be like saying that his parents didn't do a good enough job raising him. Cal is nothing if not loyal to his family.

  • I am curious about what might have happened if he hadn't read the report though. Do you think he might have tried to continue on as a girl for a lot longer to appease his family?

  • I think KEP makes a very good point. I think Callie would have tried hard to be a good girl to make her family happy after having the surgery.

I still think Callie may have been happy as a little girl, although who remembers identity that well as a child? Sure you may remember who you were attracted to and drawn to, but sexuality? I think it was only with puberty that things started to get really confusing. The "something" that Callie might have felt as a little girl started to take a shape that was very frightening. I agree that the whole locker room terror was more than just the standard teenage angst, but I still don't think he knew enough or allowed himself to think about it enough to know what he was afraid of other people seeing.
