M-Sex Six Sympathy for the Devil (and Everyone Else)

It could be argued that almost everyone in "Middlesex" is a victim of some sort. Who did you have the most sympathy for? Why? Is there any character for whom you have no sympathy? Why?

  • Why do we have to see them as victims? Perhaps they are victims of circumstance, but can't we say that about all of us not matter what our situation?

I felt the most sympathy for Tessie. It wasn't her fault that both she and her cousin/husband shared a translocated gene that she didn't know about. She felt guilt about going along with the plan to try and manipulate the gender of her child. It's unlikely that this sort of behavior had anything to do with with the way that Cal turned out. Poor thing; mother's find all kinds of things to be guilty about.

I didn't ever really feel for Chapter Eleven. I just didn't. Just your typical kid who messed his life up for a while.

  • I agree with MamaChristy about the victim of circumstance thing. As for who I felt the most sympathy for, it was Desdemona. To endure the loss of your home, put into circumstances that required a move across the ocean, and when you arrive in America to lose your livelihood (the silk worms)would be rough on anyone. Yes, she made a mistake by marrying her husband, but she must have felt the guilt for that her entire life, especially considering what happened to Cal. And when she lost her husband too and just wanted to die..... that really hit home with me because I have seen that happen to people I love.
