Ravenous Readers

Monday, January 23, 2006

Has anyone started reading yet? I did, but I've been reading late at night and can't remember what I read - I'm flying to Chicago this weekend for a business trip - any suggestions for a Texas gal how to pack warm with out packing a HUGE suitcase? I'm taking the book to read on the flights. I'm one of those people who has to get to the airport EARLY early and then sit and wait for a few hours.....

  • I haven't started reading yet because I'm on the road. (I can't read on flights; too nervous.) But, I'll pick it up and read it when I get back to New York.

YAY Chicago!!!! Pack layers. Lost and lots of layers is the key to not freezing to death in Chicago.

By the way, Chicago is my hometown; let me know if you need pointers/suggestions for places to go, things to eat, or stuff to do.

PS: I posted a comment about the gameshows (Jenny Jones, Price is Right, and MTV dating show).

  • You're going to Chi-Town, Lainey? Be safe and warm.

No, not strated reading yet. I need to find a highlighter so that I can read like I did in college since I'm moderating the first time...

  • Stolie,

Layers? I wear a sweater over almost everything because the AC in the buildings is usually too cold for me... yea yea wimpy me...

So I guess I'll wear cotton button ups under pull over sweaters... Thanks for the pointers.

I'm not sure how much free time we'll have, but am OPEN for any suggestions for after hours - 'specially from a home town gal.

    So - bring them on!

    Thanks!

  • Hi girls,

I'm re-reading Emma right now, actually. Trying to get in the Jane Austen spirit!

E -- I just got back from Chicago yesterday and it was cold. So cold. It SNOWED. All the natives told me it was unseasonably warm, but as a fellow Southernor, you will not be fooled.

My two cents: take a fuzzy hat, a muffler and gloves. And make sure whatever shoes you take have traction grips on the bottom so you don't fall on your butt in the snow. Not that I'd know anything about that.

My friend I was visiting told me to buy a long underwear called Cuddle-Duds, but they do not sell such an article anywhere in the Miami metro area. Maybe you'll have better luck in Big D.

    Have fun!

  • Muffler - check (got one last year at Christmas when we were visiting the nephews in New York)

    Gloves - check

Fuzzy Hat...Cuddle Duds - no check. Guess I'm goin shoppin'!

I went last night and found some cashmere sweaters on sale (meaning clearance), they were not heavy weight, but really warm.

I am taking my "city boots" (associated story on my blog) so we'll see if I can stay up-right in them.. LOL

oh ya'll get this --- I'm trying for ONE suitcase - yeppers just one...

    Cheers!

  • Just got back to New York; I hope you get this before you depart ...

    1. Pick up a Chicago Reader. It's the "It" guide for anything and everything going on in the city. From country line dancing to jazz ensembles to free yoga classes, anything you want to know it listed there. It's free and you can pick one up at any coffee shop, Borders, etc.

    2. If the Christmas decorations are still up, walk along the Miracle Mile. On Michigan Avenue, walk north from about Jackson to Chicago.

    3. Chicago Cultural Center. They have GREAT cultural events. Enter the building and there is a huge list of activities for the day posted. If nothing interesting is going on, take a stroll of the building to take in quite lovely architecture,

    4. Skip the Sears Towers all together and go have a drink on top of the John Hancock building. The view is better and you'll use your money on a tasty entree, delicious dessert or fabulous cocktail instead of hanging with the tourist.

    5. The Museum of Contemporary Art has "First Fridays" and they are actually pretty cool. Check out their website for more info. If you wont be there next Friday, the museum is still worth a visit. They have a strong collection.

    6. Screw the Italians in Italy, Chicago INVENTED pizza. Lou Malnatis is one of the BEST around.

    7. Chicago is a city of a million neighborhoods. Do a self-guided walking tour of Humboldt Park (Puerto Rican), Pilsen (Mexican), Ukrainian Village (I'll give you one guess) or one of the many different ethnic enclaves.

    8. Steppenwolf. Second City. Both are great.

    9. DuSable Museum, Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum and the Polish Museum of America are also great.

    10. Wrigley Field. Pay it a visit if you're a baseball fan.

That's all that I can think of for now. Everyone tastes are different and that's what makes the world so special and beautiful. The things listed about are thing that *I* love about the city. If you have a particular hobby/interest/favorite food/whatever and you want to know how to find it in Chicago, feel free to email me on yahoo at stolieXOXO if you need info and/or want advice.

  • Stolie,

Thanks Thanks Thanks! I did get to read your post before departure. We leave out Sunday AM and are there until Tuesday afternoon.... short but sweet. I looked at the schedule and Monday evening is "event free" so I"ll check it out. I"m sure I'll find something in the Chicago Reader. Thanks also for the heads up re: John Hancock. I'm not one for heights, but it sounds too good to pass up based on my wimpy fear of heights. LOL

Jenni: I found the cuddl duds at the Mall last night - I called ahead and had a very helpful sales woman named Beulah (sp?) help me. She had every thing ready when I got there. I also went to Target and found mens flannel sleep pants and tops on sale for $2 a pop.... yea I loaded up on as many smalls as I could find.

This will prob be my last post until after the trip, so ya'll have a beautiful weekend!!!

    Cheers,
    E
